Vilestroom~Vliestroom and her sister ships MV Nieuwe Diep and Schuitengat were built by Damen Shipyards in 1987-90 for the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Waterways. Powered by 2x Deutz diesel engines, the vessels feature twin Kort nozzles, four-blade propellers, a 90 kW bow thruster and a 7.5 ton buoy-handling crane. The folding main mast and cantilevering radar masts together with the low draught flat-bottomed hull allow for a very versatile craft, which can encounter low bridges and shallow waters in and around Holland. This unusual and distinctive model is based on the full-sized Vliestroom, built in 1987, operating out of Hellevoetsluis near Rotterdam. Link to The Hague MBC shows photos and information on original ships including Vliestroom.

Model specifications: Twin Screw Scale 1:40 Length: 960 mm (37¾") Beam: 220 mm (8.5") Displ. approx. 10 kg~

Kit Contents: The kit contains the usual high quality glassfibre hull, with full running gear including brass propellers and steerable nozzles. A bow thruster tube. Deck and superstructure are cut using CNC equipment to ensure accurate fit of parts; the very detailed wheelhouse interior includes etched brass instrumentation. Also included are the cranes, a resin-cast dinghy, a set of vacuum-formed buoys, a sheet of etched brass components for the fine details, brass handrail stanchions, cast metal fittings, all decals, wire, rod etc. to build the model as illustrated (flag is not provided). The full-size plans and step-by-step assembly drawings make this model an enjoyable and relaxing project for model makers with average building skills. (Paints, adhesives and tools to complete are not provided). The large deck crane which elevates and swivels will without a doubt be a challenge for the more experienced model maker wishing to radio control it. Without a working bow thruster we found Vliestroom's performance outstanding due to the steerable nozzles

Gry Maritha~The vessel was built in 1981 to operate in the Norwegian fjords carrying mixed cargos to the isolated communities of the region. Purchased in 1989 by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, Gry Maritha continues her role as a mixed cargo carrier between Penzance in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The vessel carries all the fuel requirements of the islands by means of transportable fuel tanks on the deck restrained in fixtures alongside the folding hatches, loaded and unloaded by the deck crane. At the rear, the deck is further strengthened to accept standard containers. On the model the deck crane swivels and elevates, and the hatch covers can be made as a one-piece removable unit, or to fold back and hinge open as on the full-size vessel. The complete kit includes approximately 1400 parts and is recommended for the more experienced model maker.

Range Safety Craft~The primary task of these craft is firing range surveillance and clearance in coastal areas around the United Kingdom. Twelve craft in total were built from 1978 to 1984. Standard engines were Rolls Royce C8M-410, replaced by Volvo Penta TAMDI22D during 1995 giving a top speed of 21 knots. The Model: Building the model does not require great skills as many parts are ready-made thus ensuring that the boat is completed in a relatively short time. While the plan is of the 15m Range Safety Craft the model lends itself to adaptation into other boats such as pilot launches, police launches etc. With twin propellers, performance on the water is realistic and true to scale. Recommended for model makers with a little experience.

Model specifications:Twin Screw Semi Scale: 1:16 Length o/a: 950mm (37-1/4") Displacement: approx. 9 lbs (4 kilos)

10 Hatch Coaster~Built in 1968-73 in the German Democratic Republic for service in the North Sea and Baltic seaports, these coasters were designed as multi-purpose carriers, handling diverse cargoes such as wood, paper, grain, containers etc. Over 30 vessels were originally built for Lars Rej Johansen of Oslo, however they have since changed hands and names. A feature is the bulbous bow which reduces hydrodynamic drag resulting in considerable fuel savings. Our model depicts a typical motor coaster of the era.
